McAfee Host stopped working and was closed

Since the beginning of the year I've had the annoying little message "McAfee Host stopped working and was closed" pop up several times a day in a MS Windows box.  It is followed by the words " A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available".

I see that thousands of other people have been getting this message and there is no clear consensus on what is causing it or how to fix it.  It is typical of so many computer error messages in that it is completely devoid of meaning to the ordinary user, but leaves one wondering if one should be doing somthing about it.  I now have no idea if my antivirus protection (which is BT Netprotect Plus - unhelpfully not listed in the products drop-down) is working or not.

Maybe someone at McAfee could enlighten us as to why their products are stopping working, and what the implications of their "closure" is to their user community.
