Installation Problem

I have been attempting to reinstall Security Center via Comcast. After I restart the computer, and the download begins, I get this message:

"An error occurred while copying file mcpmain.inf. Cannot copy file to destination directory. Click Retry or Cancel."

The computer is a Dell Dimension 4700 with Windows XP Home. It is four years old.

I have uninstalled other security software, although had some trouble. I have used McAfee Virtual Technician, searched other forums, etc, and need help. TIA.

RE: Installation Problem

Which other security software did you have problems removing?

At this point, try running MCPR (see my signature), rebooting the PC and then try again.

RE: Installation Problem

There seems to be a bug in Ad-Aware 2007, causing it not to be removable in the normal way after a machine has been updated to IE7.
Lavasoft have put up some removal instructions:

No Luck

Ran MCPR. Also tried the steps recommended on the Lavasoft support forum (I had visited this site previously and tried most of the rcommendations). I still am unable to get McAfee downloaded. The same error message appears. I am ready to look for other security programs.

RE: No Luck

I just did a search for 'mcpmain.inf'. Most search results were a torrent site.

Is it possible that there is some malware on your computer that prevents the reinstallation of McAfee ? You could try an online scan with Kaspersky, Bitdefender. For spyware, SAS and MBAM (free), possibly scan in safe mode ?

You could also try the Revo uninstaller to remove leftovers from Lavasoft and other software.
