I need to get McAfee SecurityCenter to update through an authenticating proxy server

Hi,

I have McAfee SecurityCenter 9.3.151, and I am behind a proxy which requires authentication. How can I tell SecurityCenter the address of the proxy and the authentication details?

Hmm, that seems to say the only way to get around it is to manually re-install the virusscan to get the updates, and that it's not possible to get SecurityCenter to automatically traverse an authenticating proxy. Is that right?

Basically if the proxy server needs authentication - yes. Remove the requirement for authentication and the patch should get it working.

Well, that won't be happening. This is a student laptop, and the school will not be allowing anonymous proxy access. We will have to tell our boarding students that McAfee is not suitable for use at our school.

I've made it a point for our next conference call with McAfee on Monday. This really should have been seen to by now.

I'll also flag it here to see if an yone has any brainwaves on the subject.

I received an answer from the technicians already:

There is no fix because McAfee SecurityCenter can't deal with the credentials needed for an authenticated proxy. I have heard that this may be coming in xxxxx.

xxxxx being the code name for next year's consumer product line.

Thanks for the update. It's good to have a definitive answer.

In the meantime, is there anywhere I can get the domain/IP addresses of the McAfee update servers so that we can allow unrestricted traffic to them? This is the only other way to allow students to update if they have a copy of McAfee.

Hmm, now that's a tall order.. I will have to ask. I suppose one way of getting at least 1 IP would be to do a Command Prompt and enter ping download.mcafee.com hit Enter.

Not sure about any other way, but I'll get back to you on that.

hi..sorry to butt in..

not sure if this is what you actually meant with the one i highlighted..if not i apologize..:o

as an alternative:

to download mcafee updates(Download Virus Definition Updates (DATs)), you can go to http://vil.nai.com, then under DAT Information, you can click on DAT Downloads to manually download the updates..
