How to disable McAfee on access scanner service

Hi,

I am sorry, if this question already exists.  I have not found any answer regarding this question.

I have installed McAfee Total Protection (consumer) in my laptop.

I am able to disable the On access protection using the McAfee tray icon, but not able to stop the "McAfee On Access Scanner service" from the services window. It occupies 230 MB of RAM. There are so many McAfee services are running in the background. It is difficult to use all other applications as McAfee occupies more of the space.

Is there any way to temporarily stop All the McAfee services?  using registry or command line ?  ( I tried using services window, but I am not able to stop it. I have done it from administrator account)

You can't do that without causing the software to malfunction and why are you doing this?  You may as well uninstall the software.

Yoy could try disabling Access Protection first - SecurityCenter > Navigation > General Settings and Alerts > Access Protection, then maybe you could do what you want.

But if you do that the software is useless and you are prone to infection.

The memory occupied in Device Manager is Virtual and the real usage comes with the CPU.   How much memory is installed?

As well as the specs that Peter asked for Two questions also need answering ie what is the current version of the Mcafee software and what is the operating system installed.

Operating System ;  Windows 8

RAM : 2 GB

I have disabled the access protection, but not able to stop all McAfee services in services window. Some services doesn't have the stop, start options.

Even though, I stop On access scanner from the McAfee Security center, the "On Access scanner" process still resides in memory and I am not able to kill the process.

All the McAfee protection services and processes are started, even after I kill the processes.

It seems there is no other way to stop these processes temporarily. McAfee should have given a provision to control the software by the User (since it is a consumer product).

Problem is if you can disable the service malware would be able to as well.With access protection disabled not a good idea to leave it that way as malware could gain a hold of Mcafee.

You can turn off real-time protection and the firewall in SecurityCenter but the Services are on for a reason and should not be meddled with.   If something is slowed down, it may not be totally the blame of McAfee and Technical Support might be your best bet to troubleshoot that.  It's free by phone or online chat and linked under Useful Links at the top of this page.

I will confess we Mods noticed a larger than usual number of Services running in the latest builds and Support are aware that people are concerned, so who knows, there may be changes coming.

Tecnical Support might know.

As Tony recommends, re-enable Access Protection please......for your own safety.    Rule of thumb for safe computing is NEVER turn off your protection, except in extremely exceptional circumstances such as when a service pack is installed, or Windows 8.1 is installed, for instance.

You shouldn't have to do that to accomodate some other software.  Instead that software should be patched to deal with it.

BTW if this is a 64-bit system, 2gb RAM is the absolute minimum requirement so maybe look into increasing that if you can.

I remember back in the days of my old Pentium 4 increasing my RAM gave me a huge 'bang for my buck'.

I have understood why the services are keep on running  (Malware may take control of McAfee).

It solved my concerns regarding Total Protection.
