Error Scanning & Protection

McAfee updated my laptop (Dell Vostro 1500) with the new total protection 3 user. Now when I boot it comes up with your not protected, I click the button, it take me to the "Turn on real time" I click that button and my PC freezes for 4-5 minutes. When it comes back it says I'm not protected, I go through the process again and it freezes for 4-5 minutes. I then ignore the you not protected and reboot and it runs fine. However, if I run "Scan Full" it runs for awhile, then says it had an unexpected error, run the scan again. Then I'm back into the 4-5 minute freeze mode. I have the latest dat file 5963 I think it is, but I'm not comfortable thinking that McAfee is really protecting my PCs. My desk top seems to run fine but also gets the unexpected error when scanning. What is my next step, can anyone help? BTW I'm running Windows XP sp3, and my desk top is a Dell Inspiron 530s.
