Done that now
I have been a McAfee Security Center user for several years because it is included free with my internet service provider. I just now signed up with this group as a way to voice my frustration with McAfee.
I went several years with "Your computer is unsecure, Real Time Scanning if off" or some such warning. I constantly turned Scanning back on, only to have it turn itself off again in a short while. Customer service and the Virtual Technician were no help.
After I received update 11.0.654 that problem hopefully seems resolved but now the Security Center desktop icon won't stay away.
"Real Time Scanning" would not stay "on" and now the Desktop Icon won't stay "off"'.
I now feel better putting my name on the list of unhappy McAfee customers.
It is an easy fix

It seems some installs just fail to have the icon registry key set right. The FAQ will fix it.
Not an easy fix for me. I had tried the registry update at id TS101314 several times. Icon still reappears.
call support ask for an escalation. Will ping a tech I know as well. Done this.
You did disable access protection? as mentioned?

You feel confident to edit the registry? I feel that reg file is incorrect
You will need to disable access protection and reenable it after The registry key should be as shown
If you have Security Center 11.0.654 and the desktop icon wont go away....
Check the following registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\McAfee\MSC\Shortcuts
Let me know the value of MSC_ShowDesktopIcon
I found one customer today was missing this registry key which is important.

Message was edited by: Peacekeeper on 28/03/12 7:51:17 AMThere is no registry entry for "Shortcuts". Nor for "Program Info" or "Instrumentation" if they have any bearing.
I went back through the posts and saw the info for manually adding the "Shortcuts" registry key but I kept getting the messsage "Cannot create Key: Error writing to the Registry". I am the Administrator but have not attempted a manual registry edit before.
As I said, my posting in this forum was to addd my name to the list of those with the reappearing Desktop icon problem. Although I like a clean desktop, i will live with the problem. Everything else works fine with the Security Center and I do not want to reinstall again.
Thanks for the attempt to help.
It sounds like you haven't disabled access protection which protects the McAfee registry keys.
Follow the instructions in this faq http://service.mcafee.com/faqdocument.aspx?id=TS101314 and it should fix the issue.
