Peter,
I won't doubt it if this post gets deleted or even gets me banned, but...
I call B.S.....on both points.
1st, to tell people that will get the fix on X date then when that date comes to tell them that it will be several more days is just utter B.S.
2nd, to tell people that if they want it sooner than they need to jump thru hoops, and defeat Mcafee's system by pretending you are something/somewhere you are not is wrong. Customers went thru hoopes going to work each day to earn the money to buy the product. Asking them to do more is....B.S.
3rd, blocking a thread because of "flaming" is just lazy. EVERY board like this has options to block the users who are the problems. On the contrary, I was reading that a few people were upset that they were getting so many emails of the updates. They were advised that the email's about updates is an OPTION that can be set either way. To prevent the users from using thread just to appease some that don't know how to uncheck a box is..... say it with me.....B.S.
Finally, this thread seems to indicate itself that the fix is not necessarily working anyway.
Now, as I said at the top of this post.....any bets on if it gets deleted?

Gees Mitch be happy they did not put the normal 3% throttle on the update. Two posters here have registry issues with the patch noone else that I see has. peter and I installed off the aussie site and all stable.
Support is trying to see why these 2 failed but they are working now . The manual registry file should fix things if the update fails to. They did say teh date but they did say it would be throttled.
The patch is set to go to 25% of customers, therefore it may take several days to reach everyone.
Try for the update now and tomorrow morning .It will require a beboot
The two EN-AU cases we saw seem to have been one offs. Since the time they posted, we have been trying to reproduce this issue. We also haven't gotten any cases in support from EN-AU and not one for EN-US or EN-GB today.
During a fresh install the registry key gets added. We are unable to reproduce the installer failing to add this key. It is of course easy to reproduce if someone or a third party registry cleaning application removes the key afterwards. With Access Protection on, the key will be protected.
If we get another case where the key doesn't get created from the installer, please let me know. For now we are assuming everything is working as planned.
The patch started rolling out to EN-US and EN-GB today. Throttle is set to 25%. A fresh install will give you the latest bits.
Regards,
I just did a fresh install from the US server. Uninstalled. Checked that the registry key was gone. Installed. Registry key was created. Deleted icon. Checked for an update. Icon is still gone. Rebooted. Checked for an update. Icon is still gone.
Looking good from my end.
I am in the United States and it is now past the 17th, and no new update that I can see. I want to drop McAfee and add the free AVG because this icon thing is so annoying to me. I delete it, and it just comes back. FIX IT!!
It is fixed but noone can wait it seems.. As doug mentioned he got it by uninstalling and reinstaling you just need to retry update.Throttling is necessary My wife got it on day 1 here in australia. Lucky I suppose.
Why Should The Customer have to change ANYTHING. It's your program. FIX IT my icon still reappears and it is the latest version! It's the companies resposibility to fix this or refund our money.
detu,
Did you try a fresh install or just the update?
Check the following registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\McAfee\MSC\Shortcuts
Let me know the value of MSC_ShowDesktopIcon
And let me know if you would like me to fix it remotely.
Thanks,
I'm new and have been following to repair the icon on the desktop which appeared around 12-25-11. I waited for the update on the 17th in the US. My three computers show they have updated, as scheduled, but the version for the SecurityCenter is still 11.0.649. My understanding from this blog and the other blogs on this subject is when SecurityCenter updates I would receive the new version. So what gives?
