Deadlock

Security Center says the DAT file is not up to date. It tries to update it, apparently this does not work. The cycle continues time after time.

Mc Afee Virtual Technician also says the DAT is out of time. He updates it (that's what it looks like). However, no update is done or the update is not effective/not registered/not logged. This is a nice deadlock: a problem is detected -> it is fixed -> and again detected.

Is there a way to get rid of this behaviour ?

RE: Deadlock

This is definitely a problem on the McAfee side. We've been reporting it here:

http://community.mcafee.com/showthread.php?t=229116
http://community.mcafee.com/showthread.php?t=229114

We've seen this problem with DATs before - ExBrit tracked the last one down to a dodgy update over the weekend (post #36 on: http://community.mcafee.com/showthread.php?t=227882&page=4).

The usual Tier 1 advice of uninstalling/reinstalling usually doesn't do any good in these instances - you uninstall, and then reinstall with an ancient DAT and it can't get the most recent one because of the bad-DAT push - and you end up being worse-off protected than before.

This appears to be the second bad push in as many months...

Are you running Security Center 9.2 or 9.3? I think there's something off in SC9.3 - my About screen is blank (http://community.mcafee.com/showthread.php?t=229113).

Problem solved

The problem is solved by doing a DAT update a couple of days later. Apparently the corrupt DAT update is overwritten by a newer correct DAT update. For the same money, the entire stuff or pc has to be reinstalled. Note that the new DAT update took significant time.

So after all the positive message is that the DAT update mechanism itself is very solid. Even if you receive a corrupt DAT or the processing of the DAT itself is corrupt, the newer update whipes out the rubbish.

RE: Problem solved

Indeed. The latest appears to have cleared up the blank About screen in SC as well.
