Assistance with AntiVirus (Not AntiVirusPlus)

I have AntiVirus (not Plus) installed.  It has been stuck on 'installing updates' for several days now.  Any selections I make in the McAfee window are ignored.  I have installed the Virtual Technician, but that does not help at all.  I have tried to uninstall McAfee, but get a message that I have to wait until the current program uninstalls or is changed.  I have mailed Tech Support, but have had no reply.  I am getting rather desperate now, so any assitance would be appreciated.  Thanks

Re: Assistance with AntiVirus (Not AntiVirusPlus)

When you open the SecurityCenter what description does it give for the products please?

I want to make sure before I suggest anything.

If possible post a screen capture of the window and load it into a post using the camera symbol.

Re: Assistance with AntiVirus (Not AntiVirusPlus)

I suggest you ignore the message that says "Installing updates". I've seen this on my machine and after the first time I learned simply to reboot. The updates are 99.999999 per cent complete, the remaining .00000001 per cent being where McAfee says "Finished" to the OS. Rebooting clears the stickiness, and completes the final bit of updating -just like with Microsoft updates.

Thank you for taking the time to reply Hayton.  However, I have repeatedly rebooted my machine, to no avail.

Re: Assistance with AntiVirus (Not AntiVirusPlus)

Try uninstalling from Control Panel and if it says it can't because processes are running and offers no override option, open Task Manager (Ctrl - Alt - Delete prsssed together or right-click the bottom desktop taskbar and select) and stop all McAfee  Applkicstions, if none then try Processes and then retry.

if this is Vista and upwards, make sure you click view processes for all users before doing that in Task Manager.

Then run the MCPR cleanup tool and reboot.

Go to your online account and reinstall from there.

Meanwhile make sure that your computer clock is accurate and that all updates are installed, especiaslly Internet Explorer, even if you don't use it, McAfee does.

I cannot stop one of the tasks in Task Manager.  I have selected to stop the task several times, to no avail.

Re: Assistance with AntiVirus (Not AntiVirusPlus)

I see you are using Windows 8. I trust that you are logged in as a user with Admin privileges.    Try disabling SiteAdviusor in your browser(s) if applicable and try turning off Antivirus Real-Time Scanning in SecurityCenter and  Firewall too and tell it to stay turned off when it asks.  You may have to reboot and start again.

Once you've turned off those two there should only be background processes left to turn off in Task Manager.
