Hi LJB,
The fix will be in the form of an automatic update. You will be asked to restart, but otherwise shouldn't have to do anything.
If you'd like to get it sooner, try doing a "check for updates" several times (maybe 6-8). It should kick start an update and get you sorted.
Did exactly that. When it did not come through around 19:00 on 1/17 , I tried again when I was on later. It came through the second time. Worked perfectly - no more extra icon.
Thanks.

McAfee did not automatically update the fix for the desktop icon issue, I had to reinstall the software myself. Then, the fix did not work until I manually changed the Registry. Makes me wonder if they cannot even update their own software correctly what are they doing with the critical anti-virus updates?
OK that's too bad as it certainly should have worked OK and sorry it didn't. A small number of people have reported they need the registry fix after the update came in and this far we have no idea why. This update had nothing to do with protection which all come in normally.
My update just downloaded and it appears to have installed properly! No more icons so far.
@ mendonsy >> do you still have the problem that the Start Menu "McAfee" folder reappears each update even though you may have moved it to a sub-folder?
adrianrp, please stop posting multiple questions on the same subject....you have been answered here: https://community.mcafee.com/message/224936#224936
No, I have not had that problem.
For reference I am using XP Pro Sp3, not Vista or Win7.
Glad you are OK.
