Recently had a similar problem. Whenever I tried a manual update, it went to 100% but then displayed a message saying it failed and to check the network connection. I also had other issues, such as DNS resolution not working intermittently. I tried the McAfee Virtual Technician tool but it found nothing wrong. I then uninstalled and re-installed SecurityCentre. Sure enough it fixed the problem. Updates now work. This happened to me once before a long time ago after an update. Something got corrupted and all subsequent updates failed.
