Hi. My Mcafee will occasionaly just stop working and shutdown and I get an error from mcagent.exe that reads "the Application failed to initialize properly 0xc000009a"
How can this problem be corrected?
Solved! Go to Solution.
See http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?lc=1033&id=TS101446 which reveals that the problem you are experiencing was probably caused by a defective McAfee DAT. You will note that the document is undated and merely refers to a "recent update", which is not exactly professional. It would appear that the defective DAT is probably 6807 but I believe that some issues may be being experienced with 6809 as well.
You will hopefully find that McAfee Virtual Technician will solve the problem (though in my case it required 2 passes).
An alternative might be to download DAT or SUPERDAT 6812 here: http://www.mcafee.com/apps/downloads/security-updates/security-updates.aspx
Message was edited by: TJB on 23/08/12 11:32:04 ISTI saw this recently somewhere but now I can't find where I saw it. Googling turns up nothing relevant. Hmm.
Have you looked in the Event Logs to see if there are any mcagent-related messages there?
How do I check my Event Logs? (Boy I must sound like a complete Noob).
Depends on your OS.
XP - see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427
Vista and Windows 7 - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc722404.aspx
Vista - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Open-Event-Viewer
Windows 7 - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-Event-Viewer
There are also McAfee error logs, lots of them. If mcagent is failing then error messages could be in one of several files. The obvious place to start is in the series of logs called "mcagent<nnn>.log" (where <nnn> is a 3-digit number starting at 000). You may have to do a Windows Explorer Search to find where they are (again, it varies by OS). And even when you find them they'll mostly be full of boring messages about "InternetCrackUrl failed for ..." - there was a discussion here about that message a while back and we decided it wasn't anything important. But there are a lot of those, and they'll obscure any messages which might be significant.
I should look at the Event Log messages first. If there's nothing you can see there, then it's quite likely that this is yet another manifestation of that faulty DAT from last Friday. Meantime I'll try to remember where I saw the post about error 0xc9a.
The same thing (error message) happen to me tonight. I looked at the logs but it's all Greek to me. Could I just reinstall? I hate being without protection.
Thanks

Message was edited by: TJB on 23/08/12 11:32:04 ISTWhat TJB says is correct : the 0xc9a error is referred to in that document, which of course is where I had seen it. I have to say I've been one of the lucky ones, and sailed right through the whole weekend from DAT 6807 to 6809 and now 6812 without seeing any problems at all, otherwise I would have known very well what that error meant.
Official advice now seems to be to run the latest release of MVT, which is said to be able to fix all the problems caused by the faulty 6807 DAT. Presumably, as TJB says, it wipes the DAT completely and forces a re-installation with a clean version. Perhaps it also checks and fixes whatever else the DAT release messed up - one business user was speculating about unsigned digital certificates.
I'll try MVT myself and see what it reports, although as I'm on 6812 now it shouldn't need to replace anything.
Hi I just wanted to add something. In some cases the McAfee won't shut down while I'm online but whenever I go to do a scan of a file on my computer, while it does the scan with no problems I always get that The Application Failed to Initialize Properly 0xc000009 window. I'm assuming this is all releated?
How do I use the MVT?
Yes, it's related. Quite a lot of reports now about "Application <whatever> failed to initialise". All down to that faulty DAT.
You can download MVT from the link I posted in a doc HERE. Be warned, I tried it and the experience wasn't quite what I was expecting. I'm going to post the edited highlights of the experience in the MVT section. Let's just say the latest version came out in a bit of a rush and I think it needs a bit more work to make it, um, less of a bumpy ride.

Oh oh. You got me afraid to try it now.;-(
