Firewall error message

When I click on the update button in the security centre, after a long wait, I get this error message: "McAfee personal firewall plus has timed out waiting for the underlying service to start. Press retry or cancel."

There is no other information.

Pressing retry produces the same message after some minutes.

What is the underlying service?

Any ideas how to diagnose this?

System is Windows XP Home, SP3, IE6, latest version of McAfee (not on the PC with the message at the moment so can't give numbers); McAfee Total Protection was downloaded afresh yesterday and a clean re-install performed; message occurred both before and after the re-install.); ADSL broadband; can use internet via browser without problem; no other noticeable symptoms.
