Lost in the installing process of Online Backup Service !

Jump to solution

I am using MS XP and McAfee Total Protection since several years. I also use the backup service of another company, which proved very helpful to me. With the new version of "Total Protection" came also a Backup Service, which I tried to use instead of the service I used before. But then I had the following problems with installing that service :

Each time I start my PC I get the message: " Configure McAfee Online Backup Service". When I do so I get the next message:"Failed to verify your username and password". When I retry I get the same message and when I cancel it, the "Registration and Configuration incomplete" Window appears. Then there are 2 buttons: "Cancel" to quit the registration process and exit setup. and "Resume" to continue registration. When I click "Resume" the same starts over again. And when I click Cancel this vicious circle is over. But the M icon (Configure McAfee Online Backup Service) in the taskbar is flashing again.

I do not know, what is incomplete in my registration and configuration. I also used the McAfee Virtual Technician to check my installation and got the result "all problems fixed". What I want to do is to get rid of this Backup Service. But I could not find a way to do so.

I got 5 licenses of McAfee Total Protection. On 2 Pcs I am using the backup service of another company. On these Pcs I do not need that McAfee service. But on the other 3 Pcs it might be of some help, when I find a way how to install it. Therefore my questions to this community are:

1) How can I get rid of the McAfee Backup Service in 2 Pcs. ?

2) How can I correctly install this service in the other 3 Pcs ?

Many thanks for your opinions and your help!

Hi,

These errors (Failed to verify user name and password) can be caused by a weak login password. A weak login password does not meet a set of requirements that make the password hard to guess. Your login password must contain at least eight characters and at least one number. If you would like to get that resolved try to reset your password for McAfee account and try configuring again that should be sorted.

And If you installed the integrated version of the client software (by clicking the link to install McAfee Online Backup inside SecurityCenter), you will not see Online Backup listed in Windows Add/Remove Programs. To uninstall the integrated version, you must uninstall your McAfee suite, uninstall Online Backup, then reinstall using the custom installation option.

To remove your McAfee suite and Online Backup

  1. Click Start, Settings, and select Control Panel (Windows Vista/7 users click the Windows Orb and select Control Panel).
  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs (Windows Vista/7 users double-click Programs and Features).
  3. Select your McAfee suite and click Remove or Uninstall/Change.
  4. Follow all prompts to uninstall your McAfee Security Suite.
  5. Restart your computer.
  6. Click Start, Settings, and select Control Panel (Windows Vista/7 users click the Windows Orb and select Control Panel).
  7. Double-click Add or Remove Programs (Windows Vista/7 users double-click Programs and Features).
  8. Select McAfee Online Backup and click Remove or Uninstall/Change.
  9. Restart your computer.

To reinstall your McAfee suite

  1. Go to http://www.mcafee.com and select Home and Home Office.
  2. Click My Account at the top right of the McAfee downloads website.
  3. Log in using your email address and password and clicking Log In.

NOTE: If you would like the McAfee downloads website to remember your username and password for future use, check the Remember Me box.

  4. Click the Download Button beside the product you would like to install.
  5. Read the McAfee End User License Agreement (EULA) and click I Agree to continue to the download and installation.
  6. Click the Download button to begin the download and installation process.
  7. When prompted with the File Download - Security Warning for DMSetup.exe, click the Run button.
  8. You may be prompted to log in to a McAfee Security Center window. Use the same email address and password that you used to log in to the McAfee website.
  9. Select the McAfee consumer product you wish to install.
  10. Click Customize below the selected product suite, then click Next.
  11. De-select the McAfee Online Backup option, then click Download to continue.

NOTE: The download and installation time will vary based on the speed of your Internet connection.

  12. When the download process completes, click Next on the Options screen.
  13. You may be prompted to install McAfee Site Advisor. If you would like this product, check the install box and click Next.
  14. When the installation completes, click Finish.

Hi,

thank you very much for your help.  I had not problem with my password, which already was long enough and also contained one number.

Then the whole process was to uninstall McAfee Total Protection and then reinstall it in custom mode, where I did not select the Backup Service. The result showed, that the Backup icon in the taskbar was no longer there.

Later on I will try to install McAfee Total Protection in the other PCs, where I also want to use this Backup feature. I hope that it will work and I am very glad and thankful, that I discovered this community, where I can get some help in case I need it.
