I don't mean a connection repair . . . I mean the kind of problem where some things on the previously functional network no longer recognize anything else as friendly and it's hard to persuade them to speak to each other again.
Rather than the product having changed over the life of this thread, it sounds like the message is that isn't going to change and the only solution to the problem is to remove it and reinstall it.
Regardless, I'm glad it was here when I encountered the problem - thanks again to all who responded. I really appreciate your help.
And how appropriate . . . just at this very moment I got the "McAfee Service Center has encountered a probjem and has to close . . . " message! Someday I'll look for a thread on that . . . .
I'm no network expert, sorry and as for this new, I hope temporary, glitch, Technical Support is your best bet, via phone or online chat through the link under Useful Links at the top of this page, it's free.
The Service Center Closing thing has been going on for months and months and is all over the internet as a "problem." My very superficial skimming of information suggests that it may be a McAfee-Firefox conflict. For me, this falls into the category of "If I wait long enough maybe either McAfee or Mozilla will figure out how to stop it and I won't have to do anything." But I'll get around to it eventually . . . .
I've seern it happen here when in fact it isn't closed at all so I think it's a false alarm, but what triggers it is anyone's guess. They are well aware of it I assure you.

Anyone with this issue please note that the issue when this thread was started was sorted out but over the years people have re-experienced it. Any new problems please start a new thread.
