Total Protection Crashing IE

A couple weeks ago a Lenovo T61 running W7 Pro 32-bit started crashing every time IE11 was opened.  The IE11 page showed:

Internet Explorer has closed this webpage to help protect your computer

A malfunctioning or malicious add-on has caused Internet Explorer to close this webpage.

What you can do:

Go to your home page

Try to return to yahoo.com

More information

Windows Data Execution Prevention detected an add-on trying to use system memory incorrectly. This can be caused by a malfunction or a malicious add-on.

Other things you can do:

Go online to learn about the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) security feature

The Windows error box showed:

Running IE without add-ons made no difference.  I could get to the Internet using Safe Mode with Networking.  To make a long story short - not malware.  Twice I used disaster recovery software to return to the 09/30/2015 state and could again access the Internet.  Once a McAfee update was run, though, I was in trouble again.  Once I unstalled McAfee from the computer, no problems.

Today I installed Total Protection 2016 on a Lenovo W510 running W7 Pro 32-bit.  After installation, I got the same behavior.  No access to the Internet other than Safe Mode with Networking.  McAfee Tech Support worked with me to restore connectivity.  It appeared that one the main step the agent took was to reset the IE11 security settings for all four zones to default.  (A couple had not been at the default level before shat.)  Only after our session ended did I go into Firewall - Intrusion Detection.  The default setting is to have the line "Basic ... (recommended) selected but the box above it "Use Intrusion Protection" unchecked.  If I checked that box, IE11 would crash every time again.  I have no idea whether the default setting actually has Basic Intrusion Protection active or not.  In any case, checking that box brings disaster.  I have tested this conclusion on the T510 and get the same behavior.

What's the deal?

Re: Total Protection Crashing IE

Thanks, catdaddy.  I'm sorry I didn't see that discussion earlier.  It took me awhile to just figure out it was a McAfee issue.

Re: Total Protection Crashing IE

,

As mentioned, please refer to this thread:

Remember to finish the installation, one has to restart.

In my set-up, it functions just fine with 'Intrusion Protection' enabled (Basic)
