Sluggishness

Jump to solution

I've noticed a couple of strange things going on and since something similar happened a couple of years ago that was caused by a McAfee update I thought I'd ask if anyone else is experiencing them.

Yesterday, I opened and closed an Open Office Writer (like Word) document.   I went to open it again, but it wouldn't open.  I click, I see the circle but it disappears.  Won't open.   So I had to open it with something else (Libre Office Writer).

I rebooted and was able to open the file in Open Office.

(This didn't happen a couple of years ago.)

Notepad documents and pictures open just fine.

And today, some web sites, not all, are taking longer to load.  Much longer.   And when they do load, they don't fill out fully and it takes more time to fill out (I use Firefox, but it also happens in Chrome).   And this is what was happening two years ago when a McAfee update was the culprit.

Just before, I opened and closed an Open Office document.  Then when I went to open it again, it wouldn't open.   Once again, I had to open it in Libre Office.

I've also had some issues with using the tab to move into different fields (cursor won't move) and the left click button; it won't click a link or copy text.  After a few long seconds, then it works.

So is anyone experiencing any of this?

Thanks.

No, nothing like that.  I did get my Microsoft updates but that was after this started happening.

Things have improved a bit on its own.

Re: Sluggishness

Some web sites load normally, but other times, if I'm in Site A and go to Site B, the name of Site B is in the tab but I'm still on Site A.  And it takes an extra few seconds, longer than it should for Site B to appear.

I wanted to check my speed so I went to Speakeasy.net.  I clicked to start it but I got a "Latency Test Error. Could not connect to the test server. A firewall could be blocking the connection or the server might be having some issues. Please try again later."   I did try it later, got the same message.

I checked my firewall and everything is set to the recommended settings.

Hi @steve7

This is a strange issue. Did you rule out if McAfee is the cause? You can try turning off McAfee Firewall and test

It is strange and getting stranger.  Because yesterday it was fine.  Web sites loaded normally,  as fast as they could.  I went into speakeasy.net and and it worked.  I thought the issue cleaned itself out.  But today, I'm back to the sluggishness.   And I'm getting that error message again in speakeasy.net.

What's also odd, with speakeasy, is that when it doesn't work, I'm getting a server from a city thousands of miles away (and if I click the "change city" nothing happens).    Whenever I used speakeasy in the past, I always got a server in my area.

Sometimes web pages "time out," or I'll get the basic block style 1990s version of the site .

This isn't a browser issue and it's not the Wi-Fi because this sluggishness happens while using the wired ethernet connection.   And since no one else is experiening this, I don't think it's a McAfee issue.

I'm not having the issue with icons or tabbing into fields.

Yes, I did turn off the firewall and speakeasy still doesn't work.   But it's strange, sometimes it works, other times it doesn't - with the firewall on or off.

So I don't think this is a McAfee issue.

You might want to check if there is any Network intensive tasks running in the background perhaps Video Streaming, Online Gaming, Windows Updates ...
