September 7, 2010 McAfee patch disables McAfee Antivirus & now McAfee AV won't reinstall

September 7, 2010 McAfee patch disables McAfee Antivirus & now McAfee AV won't reinstall

Earlier this year my brother bought a Dell PC, receiving 15 months of McAfee Antivirus with it.

On September 7, 2010, Real-time protection turned-off (red). Attempts to turn it on only resulted in a momentary green. No scans could be done.

After three days of McAfee Virtual Technician, McAfee Chats, even a phone call from McAfee Tech Support, phone calls to Dell, and phone calls to Dell-McAfee support, during which time the first McAfee Chat person completely uninstalled his McAfee AV and then could not re-install it (re-install failed), it was finally revealed that a September 7, 2010 (pushed) patch broke McAfee on Windows 7 64 bit OS, and that it should be fixed in less than a week.

Since then, my brother downloads the latest McAfee daily via his McAfee My Account and attempts to install it. This still fails. He periodically calls Dell-McAfee support. They still acknowledge their problem, hope it will be fixed soon, and tell him to keep trying to install it. He's been without his McAfee protection for nearly three weeks.

Please, someone shed some light on this.

Thanks,

psuatocobra

CORRECTION ON THE DATE OF THE PROBLEM PATCH PUSH:

September 5, 2010, but could have been as early as September 4, 2010; his PC was turned off that day.

Hi,

Please let us know your computer's configuration information, also what is the exact error message that occurs during the installation and when does it fails exactly. Have you tried to perform a System Restore to a previous date (before crash) .

You can also run the MCPR (McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool) and re-try the installation. Hope this helps you.
