Rogue.Security.Protection malware?

Hi There,

My laptop (XPHome with ATT-provided McAffee virus protection on it) recently became infected with this bogus Security scan malware that prevented any programs (IE, MSCONFIG, even Notepad) from running.  After rebooting in safe mode I was able to track down the cause on bleepingcomputer.com and following steps there installed/ran some malware software from malwarebytes.  I'm wondering though why McAffee didn't catch this in the first place?  I'm also wondering where something like this would come from - email attachment or ?  Things seem to be fine now, but I'm still wondering why I had to fix it myself.

Thanks,

Chris
