This is exactly the same issue I'm having.
Windows 7 x86
downloaded with chrome and IE 8
installed/reinstalled java and adobe
I bought this Dell rig, which came with Security Center, the subscription ran out and I picked up Total Protection when I saw that I could get it at a reasonable price. Downloaded from the website on two different browsers and let the installation sit, thinking that maybe it was a graphical glitch- but nothing. Whats funny about this issue is, the second I close the program- the graphics on the lower portion of the box come back asking me "Are you sure you want to cancel?"
I talked to customer support on the phone and after they asked me to run the set of commands and programs that completely wipe old versions of mcafee from my set up, they wanted to remote into my computer which I'm not comfortable with at all. I'm being as patient as possible and not getting in the way of anything they ask me to do, (though I could go faster), but it doesn't seem that I'm really getting anywhere. From what I've read from you guys, it looks like the only step I'm missing is being asked to install a malware removal tool which shouldn't be needed.
Very odd indeed.

So I'm downloading the beta of Total Protection, but I didnt have to give any of my original McAfee information, just create a new account. The beta is doing what I assume the paid version should have been doing...I still want to know what is happening with the program that I paid for, and why the beta works.

They can often spot what's wrong and correct it quickly. They don't selete data or pry through personal documents.
The beta is always a few versions ahead of the retail product. Any problems with that should be bug reported using the link on your beta download page or through the beta forums.
Thanks for the quick response Ex_Brit, I appreciate that.
I'm not really worried about whats on my machine, kinda weird to assume that. I just meant that I have been reading through these forums and seen a couple of people complain about their systems crashing after the remotes. Doesn't really seem like something I'm willing to take a chance with. The idea of anyone tinkering away with programs behind the scenes with or without my knowledge is kind of a turn-off for me.
Either way, I guess I'll hold off until they call me back- which is what I was told after saying I'd rather they didn't remote my system.
OK, I was only guessing, sorry. Good luck.
I just tried to install McAfee 2010 on my computer running windows 7. It screwed up my entire computer. I'm not a total computer dummy, I tried to install it, and it when it came to the part when you need to restart, i did, and my computer would not load up. would get to the windows screen, and go black. tried restarting serveral times. no luck.. had to go into safe mode, and put my computer back to before i downloaded mcAfee 2010. Anyways, kept trying all this, uninstalling mcafee (old) and the same things would happen, the whole thing completly screwed up my computer, would not load up at all normally, and only some times in safemode, i finally got back into safe mode, took everything i needed off of it, and put my computer back to factory.
I did call McAfee for help. no luck, the person i spoke to took ages finding any information, and i had to repeat my self about what the problem was about 1000 times. Very frustrating. After putting it back to factory. i tried once more installing mcafee, finally got it installed and working. Now to try and get it on my other computer. This WILL BE the last time i purchace McAfee. (not the first time having problems installing it either.)

I assume 64 bit version of win 7? What PC brand is it a Dell. Also are you using wireless networking or have a wireless card/chipset installed in the PC? If so what is the brand/chipset and driver version?
That description of the issue appears to be similiar to several users are getting a blank screen after the 1st reboot after installing the product. It is being looked at and my question is 1 path they are investigating.
