Hi
First, I don't know if I have to write stays on or stays at or ... 😞
Since some weeks, I experiment some trouble with many PCs under Windows XP Pro SP3 + McAfee Internet Security 2013.
When the user shuts-down the PC, it deosn't shutdown completely, but stays on (at, ... 😉 "Arrêt en cours".
The user must push the power button 4s to completely shut-down the PC.
With some PC, I've desactivated the "real time protection" ("analyse en temps réel" en français), and after that, no more problem.
On some PCs, I've re-installed McAfee, and after, no problem !
So, we could imagine that this is THE solution !
But I would to understand why McAfee gives this problem. And I would like not reinstalling McAfee on all PC PCs under Windows XP. So if there is an other solution ...
Do you know this problem ? Is there a solution ?
Thanks.
Stéphane
Check in your Control Panel Add or Remove Programs for McAfee Security Scan Plus or a Norton equivalent. Those are unnecessary sales tools that are optional downloads with Adobe & other products and are not needed. Uninstall them if listed.
They can cause this.
......
The regular software should not be causing this and may have somehow become corrupted.
If the above does not help uninstall ALL McAfee software (Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs), then run the MCPR Cleanup Tool, reboot and reinstall from your online account.

Thanks for your answer ... wich seems to be a "generic" answer, when somebody has a problem with McAfee ...
2 things if you please :
- "Remove Programs for McAfee Security Scan Plus ... Those are unnecessary sales tools" : So, McAfee Security Scan Plus, a McAfee product, is an "unnecessary sales tool". So, why deos McAfee offer this "unnecessary sales tool" ? An why McAfee Security Scan Tool can be installed, if a "complete" McAfee poduct is still installed ? McAfee Internet Security can tell us "be aware, there is Malwarebyte's on this PC, so remove it before installing McAfee", but McAfee Security Scan Plus can't stop its installation when McAfee Internet Security is still installed !!! Thanks McAfee !
- "The regular software should not be causing this and may have somehow become corrupted.". Ok, this could be a cause. But I don't understand why so many PCs have the same problem at the same time. I think, I have 5 PCs under Windows XP SP3 which have the problem. Why McAfee has become corrupted at the same time on all this PCs? An other fact is that mcshield uses always 10 to 40 % of CPU (even at idle). . Do you think it's normal ?
I will probably have to re-install McAfee on all the PCs. Or perhaps, remove it definitely because there are to many problems with it, and "not always" a solution. It's to simple to say "reinstall McAfee". Ok, it can solve the problem this time, but are you sure that this will not come back again ?
So, please, i don't know what is your "full time job" at McAfee, but what I wish, is that McAfee help me to understand the cause of the problem, and how to solve it. If not, I think it will be the last year I install McAfee on PCs.
Thanks.
Best regards.
Stéphane
I think we have a language problem and I don't speak very good French, I am sorry.
You have misunderstood me. IF, and only if you have Security Scan Plus in your program list, uninstall it. If not, then forget about that part. It is offered by Adobe, not McAfee.
If all your machines have the same problem then perhaps they all have the samer cause, which can't be diagnosed here, so please contact Technical Support as I suggested.
These forums are primarily peer-to-peer support. I do not work for McAfee and am simply a volunteer here. I think you need McAfee French language support and I posted the link before.
Hi Ex_Brit
Thanks for your answer.
Your post was very clear for me 🙂 No problem with what you wrote.
There's not McAfee Security Scan on the PCs. And I understand that in this case, there is nothing to unsinstall 🙂
But :
- I don't think that Adobe offers McAfee Security Scan without McAfee's agreement.
- If McAfee Security Scan is not compatible with McAfee Internet Security, why McAfee Security Scan doesn't verify that it can be installed without risk ?
I came here because when I call McAfee support, I often have no good answer. I was hoping that someone here has the same problem.
I will try again asking help to McAfee french support.
I think, I'm sure, it can't be another explanation, that the cause is a McAfee update.
Dear Ex_Brit, thanks again for your answer. You're "just" a volunteer, it must be difficult to answer to people like me 🙂
Best regards.
Stéphane
I never said it was incompatible. I said it may contribute to this shut down issue. Abobe and other software offer SSP and other products as options with all it's downloads and yes of course it's with the agreement of the other manufacturer, I would imagine it is because it helps financially to keep their software free. If it isn't there, then fine, you can ignore that.
Please open a case with Technical Support and have them troubleshoot the issue. They are far better equipped than I or any of the vomunteers here.

I said in my first response to try "uninstall ALL McAfee software (Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs), then run the MCPR Cleanup Tool, reboot and reinstall from your online account." - That usually fixes this sort oif issue.
Support are going to suggest that anyway. With Support however you can always ask them to escalate it to a higher level.
Maybe someone else with the same issue will spot this and post, but that may take a while.
