Mcafee Home page throws message "your computer is at risk" and "Updates" has a red cross against it

I purchased McAfee Total Protection 2011 and installed it on 01/30/11. I installed the software from the cd.

Now Mcafee Home page throws message "your computer is at risk" and "Updates" - Available has a red cross against it.

When I click on "Check for Updates", nothing downloads though it shows it is updating and then says its done.

The message after it is  - Your programs are up to date and Automatic Updates: On.

However the Mcafee Home page throws message "your computer is at risk" even after all this.

Please advise asap.

Thanks in advance.

- Joy

Did you have another AV program installed previously. If so did you use add/remove programs to remove it or its own uninstall tool. the latter is really the way to go.

Also post your Operating system and service pack as well as PC specs

Hi

I had McAfee installed prior to this one...and I did not manually uninstall the older version (expired).....

It was un installed autmatically when I ran the Total Protection 2011 cd...

My computer details are -

Windows 7 Home Premium

Intel Core i3... 2.12 GHz

3 GB RAM

Hope this helps...

Thanks

Hi joydeep07,

As the first step, please run McAfee virtual technician from here http://mvt.mcafee.com and post us your session id back here.

Also, let us know the following details

> Click on start – click on start search – then type : drivers

Open the  folder that says “etc” – Right click on the file Hosts and select open

Choose Notepad to open the program with.

Make sure that the last line of the host file contains : 127.0.0.1 and any other additional entries below that could be deleted and save the host file accordingly

> Click on start – click on start search – then type : cmd

Among the options – Right click on cmd and select Run as administrator

In the command prompt window – type – ping download.mcafee.com and press enter

Let us know if you receive a valid reply from the site and not a loop back address as such as 127.0.0.1
