I'm having this problem with 2 of my PCs running Total Protection as well. Wasn't sure what the cause was till I googled and saw your post. Hope to see some solutions offered here.
We have this as an agenda item for our Moderator call tomorrow. While waiting try resetting browsers to default and the firewall if you can access it to default.
I'm having a very similar issue with my McAfee Internet Security, it's version 14.0 R11 running on windows 7
Noticed two days ago that I was not able to open McAfee in any way, but it seemed to be working anyways on Task Manager. Today I noticed when made double click that a windows message appeared saying something like: "program is updating, please wait" . Waited for more than an hour and nothing happened, the same message appeared.
I decided to make a test and try to scan one file manually, don't know if it did scan it or not, mcafee did not opened after some seconds thinking.
Checked on Task Manager and found that a program called mcupd~1 or something like that was active, but doing nothing.
Rebooted the computer but without internet connected, and surprise, I can access McAfee again. I decided to change the option "automatic updates" to "notify me", in a try to avoid the program to install automatic updates and block mcafee as it does not appear now.
I'm waiting to see what happens now, maybe I'll try a manual update to see how it reacts.

My "solution" did not resolve the problem, after few hours I was unable to access McAfee again.
I was able to access McAfee again and update manually once I rebooted the laptop and all seemed to work, but it was for few hours. Anyways, the protection did not seemed to stop, just the interface was locked with the message of "program is updating" when double click on the icon.
I'm in Dallas, TX, on US Central Standard Time. I'll try reloading McAfee on my Win 8.1 Dell Laptop from the Support web site later today to see if it still behaves the same way. I'll provide you with the versioning after I do the reload, and will report back on the machine behavior, whether good or bad.
