But do you have IE installed?

I have had the same problem for a couple of weeks on two separate PCs. One runs XP/SP2 and the other XP/SP3. I can't identify an activity which triggers the error - occurrences are typically several hours apart.

Hi sagalout,
I don't think that McAfee supports X"'s Service Pack 2 any longer on Windows XP Home or Professional Editions.
@sagalout,
thecreator is correct, SP2 is no longer supported. There's help with installing SP3 here: https://community.mcafee.com/thread/2007
There are so many possible causes for this service host issue that it's probably best to open a case with Technical Support if it becomes a nuisance, they are free via phone now, as well as online chat. But you must update to SP3 first.
As of July 13, 2010 anyone without SP3 no longer receives updates from Microsoft. See this document for more information.
That's if the various suggestions in this thread don't help you of course.

All Ok asked before but can you confirm you have no zumo or Hp cloud software installed. Also Mcafee needs someone to get logs from . They will not access private info on your PC and this log getting is essential to nut out this issue.
Post back if you are willing to help out
What exactly does sending a log entail, what needs to be done?
one can run it yourself but best that tech do it. Can you allow him to contact you?
I am having the same issue on a Windows XP SP3 Dell Laptop which is fully up to date. It has the latest IE on it (though I don't use it) and Firefox 8.0 (up to date also). I should mention I am running BT Netprotect Plus software which is Mcafee under a different badge.
I boot up the laptop and leave it, i.e do nothing to it, and after a while an application error occurs. It has an event log entry too:
Faulting application McSvHost.exe, version 2.0.230.0, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.6055, fault address 0x00011780.

I have the same issue: McAfee Service Host has encountered a problem and must close. Is there a way to fix this?

Hi jimrockford,
Save the dump as above and contact Technician Support. Also include what you were doing when it appears.
It appears randomly.
