In-built advertising Take 3

Third time lucky I'm hoping...

Like many others, I am receiving relentless pop-up ads from McAfee trying to get me to upgrade from Total Protection to PC Optimizer.

Apparently this is a built-in feature (not that this stopped some hopeless tech support person from wasting an hour or so uninstalling and reinstalling Total Protection as a guaranteed fix of the issue). This is obviously annoying and unethical.

Can someone from McAfee tell me if this kind of advertising without any opt-out is legal under Australian consumer law?

Please don't refer me to engineers or the help desk - the response should be a matter of public record.

Hi @DannyCh

Greetings from McAfee!!

Sorry for the inconvenience caused. McAfee will not advertise any kind of product upgrade or down grade. This pop up might be malware and it can be get rid with below steps.

Your browser displays fake McAfee notifications

Re: In-built advertising Take 3

No

As I said above, this is a built-in feature. If it is a scam, the scammer is McAfee.

This has been confirmed in numerous, frustrating, interactions with some fairly hopeless tech support staff.

Please advise whether this kind of built-in advertising with no opt-out is legal under Australian consumer law.
