Re: BSOD when connecting to internet using dial-up services (yes some people still do this)

A success story...so far.

Though my case was not BSOD, but a freeze of the OS (Win XP) upon connection to the ISP, it seems similar.  After 6 weeks of trying various things (replaced modem hardware, uninstalled/reinstalled drivers, deleted and re-created the dialup setups, tried from another phone line, took the PC to a broadband/ethernet connection to get McAfee and other updates), I finally uninstalled McAfee and was able to connect.

I find this offensive: "Dial up not that common so I gather and it is something in the ISP login software that is reacting to Mcafee's software."  But considerate moderators are not so common so I gather.

Nothing was ever installed from Earthlink's CD, so there was no "ISP login software" on my mother's PC.  I originally created the dialup connections manually in Win XP, and I created them all over again in my 6 weeks of troubleshooting before discovering the McAfee association with the problem.   My guess is that it is something in McAfee's software that is reacting to a supported operating system.

I ran MCPR to remove vestiges of McAfee Security Center (orignally bundled with the Dell PC), then started the first chat-support session.  As advised (SR758846726), downloaded and reinstalled McAfee...and the PC returned to locking up, usually at "Registering your PC on the network" or "Authenticating".

Second chat-support session (SR 759652723) was mostly remote-controlled, and temp files and cookies were deleted, and IE was returned to defaults (then modified to defeat SSL 3 and something else) and almost all IE add-ins were disabled.  Reboot, reconnect, re-freeze.

Third chat-support session (SR 759716066) was turned over to Tier 2 in fairly-short order.  I was about to insist, anyway.  The 2nd-level tech started a remote session, closed the chat window, then ran through a lot of changes fairly quickly, so I did not colllect much detail, but I did notice that a fixed DNS was entered for every network connection.  (I should have deleted the plethora of dialup connections I had created during my earlier 6 weeks of troubleshooting, because it took a long time for the tech to modify all of those.  If the chat window were open, I would have stopped him and let him know those could be deleted.)

That appears to have worked, and I plan to return the PC to my mother's house tomorrow.   I pity those people who have no ability to take their PC with dialup issues to a site with broadband.  They could experience the hours I have spent establishing and attending-to remote support.

If it freezes again, I have a leftover license from a bulk pack of Symantec AntiVirus from one of my employers.  It will take less time to install SAV than to run through another remote support session.

If the details of Aneesh CC's actions in SR 759716066 are available to other McAfee support, those might be of some assistance in this BSOD issue.  Publishing the recommended procedures so they will be found during internet searches might be helpful to those people who are taking their PC somewhere and paying someone to "fix it".  Those repair places may end up selling some Symantec products soon....

Sorry you got the wrong idea here. What I was trying to say  is Dial up is not that common so maybe it gets a slower reaction time from Mcafee. The issue is now being fast tracked so  this class action comment annoys me. Mcafee has to, as most major companies do, respond to the high incidence issues first so dial up users might not get the high numbers of complaints so the delay. We mods have been pushing this issue in every weekly call from the week of Post 0 in this thread. There was no intention of implying  you should not be on it I assume you would change if you could.

Hope the fix holds.

Re: BSOD when connecting to internet using dial-up services (yes some people still do this)

Maybe I spoke too soon.  The second time I tried dialup...the PC froze.

Here I go, failing to follow-through on my Symantec threat: SR 759743089 now in progress....

Re: BSOD when connecting to internet using dial-up services (yes some people still do this)

i first installed McAfee total pro 2011 in June when my subsciption for 2010 expired.

my problem started in july right after McAfee did an update.

my refund problem has been elivated to the second teir in costermer service.

the class action lawsuit was a suggestion from a friend of mine that is a lawyer he said that it was one avenue that i could follow.

the reason that i was even thinking about a suit was because us little guys are getting tired of being screwed over by these big companies. this has nothing to do with the help that we have been getting from you and the other hard working moderators.

without people like yourself companies like McAfee would have been in the crapper a long time ago.

What's the latest on this issue? Any progress? Still having the PC freeze when connecting if I do not run AOL first.

Of course I would be happy to - as long as reinstalling is not required (11+ hours on dialup).

Last I spoke with Dinesh , he had all he needed off my system.

Re: BSOD when connecting to internet using dial-up services (yes some people still do this)

it looks like McAfee still cannot get it together as for me my system is up and running great.

I am useing Bitdefender on both of my desk tops and trend on my lap tops.

i uninstalled McAfee virus several months ago and have not looked back. no problems with my new anti virus software.

i recommend everybody that is having this problem simply write McAfee an E-Mail wishing them well without your business
