Error 771 with cablecard tuners due to firewall

Is there a fix for the error 771 with cablecard tuners which misses a recording.

OR

Can you completely remove the firewall and just run the remaing pieces of McAfee which don't interfer with the Media Center?

RE: Error 771 with cablecard tuners due to firewall

Hi,

Please clarify the below:

• What is the version of McAfee programs you have in your computer?
• What is the operating system you use?
• When do you get this Error 771? What type of internet connection you are using?
• Do you have any other security programs installed in your computer?

RE: Error 771 with cablecard tuners due to firewall

Here is the computer data:
XPS420: Quad, 4 Gig, 650/1T internal, 3 eSata
Dual ATI Cable Cards (SA-800 M)
T-W W Valley (LA)
ATI Radeon HD3870 (DVI/HDMI)
3 Maxtor NAS (320/500/1T)
2 XP, 1 Macintosh X (10.4.11), HP 280N extender, Linksys DMA2100, DMA2200
Promise Ns4300 Raid 5
McAfee was shipped with the Dell the currently installed version is:
Security Center version 9.0 build 9.0.295
VirusScan version 11, build 13.0.232
Firewall Version 10, build 10.0.208
Anti-Spam Version 10, Build 10.9.186
Running Vista Home Premium with cablecard activation
The internet connection is DSL but the cablecard tuners connect as USB but show up in Network as netowrk devices and each have a unique IP address. My home network and the unique IP addresses for each tuner are entered as trusted in McAfee Firewall
The only other security program on this machine are those that are part of Windows Vista (Defender).
The error occurs when two tv shows are scheduled to record at the same time. One will usually fail especially if it's a series recording. Sometimes it will fail and the tuner will recover and find the same show not in HD and switch to the SD channel to start recording.

I am not alone with this problem, you can see the various threads on Greenbutton related to 771 error with cablecard ATI tuners in Vista Media Center.

Most people have solved their problem by dumping McAfee and/or Norton Firewalls.

Is it possible to uninstall McAfee and then do a clean re-install without the personal firewall? The machine is primarily used as a Media Center machine.

Thanks

John

RE: Error 771 with cablecard tuners due to firewall

Hi John,

Yes, you can re-install all the programs back. But before you could do that please try out the following:

Open McAfee Security Center> Click on Internet & Network> Click on Configure on the right side> Click on the Advanced Button which is related to Firewall Protection is enabled> Click on Program Permissions> Make sure you the program which you are using for recording is been given full access

Also click on System Services on the left side> Uncheck all the ports listed on the right side, reboot the computer and check the status.

If the issue still persist, you can also uninstall only the McAfee Firewall from the Control Panel> Add/Rem programs without removing the entire programs.
