Standalone Spamkiller?

Hi,

As a Comcast subscriber I've previously tried to download and use Spamkiller (after posting about it several months ago) but I've never been able to get Spamkiller as part of the package (it's been too long to remember the exact details).

Anyway, I have a new computer now and am afraid to use email without Spamkiller (any version would be fine since I just quarantine all email till I have a chance to rescue what I want). I would gladly purchase a standalone version if it were possible but I've read on this forum that one isn't available. However, I've found the following link to just a Spamkiller version: http://us.mcafee.com/root/product.asp?productid=msk

Is it not a valid link... possibly one that should have been deleted and never was?

If it is valid, would it not run on Vista? Does anyone have it on Vista?

If not available, how does a person truly keep their email safe without first isolating it on the server? Does email scanning through virus scan do the job? I hate the thought of all that spam and malicious email bring brought into Outlook Express without actually being rescued. I haven't been able to find any program like Spamkiller that isolates the email on the server first.

Does viewing email through webmail keep it on the server and give the user a chance to delete the bad stuff?

Thanks for any help, suggestions, and reassurance. After having Spamkiller for so many years as you can see I feel absolutely lost and vulnerable without it.

RE: Standalone Spamkiller?

It is now called Anti-Spam and is available only as part of a greater package. You'd have to check with Comcast what they offer as McAfee has no control over what McAfee products they offer in their suites.

If you subscribed directly to McAfee you would need either the Internet Security Suite or Total Protection Suite.

The link you gave refers to an old 2006 version which is no longer supported.

If you only need spam protection there are alternatives. Just do a Google Search for (say) Free spam protection, or a similar expression.

VirusScan checks downloaded email for malware. Checking webmail online means you can filter mail but be careful of any attachments of course.

RE: Standalone Spamkiller?

Thanks, Peter. When I tried to download it before from Comcast, there were problems and Spamkiller wouldn't download. I was hoping to find something that isolates email before bringing it over to Outlook Express but couldn't find anything like it.

So, what you're saying is that Security Suite or Total Protection Suite (if subscribed to directlly) includes Spamkiller? If so, does it support Vista 64-bit?

Thanks for your help.

RE: Standalone Spamkiller?

Give Comcast a call regarding the download issue. Yes 64-bit Vista is supported as far as I know by the current products, although Comcast always tends to be about a year behind us.

RE: Standalone Spamkiller?

Actually, Comcast support is pretty useless. I'd gladly forego their free included product and purchase it from McAfee if it meets my needs better. Please clarify for me though (since I can't tell from the datasheet on the products on McAfee's website) - if I purchase McAfee Total Protection or Internet Security Suite, it includes Anti-Spam. And Anti-Spam works like Spamkiller? It isolates email on the server and would allow me to 'rescue' the emails I want and delete the ones I don't rather than just scanning the emails as they arrive in my Outlook Express inbox?

Thanks...

RE: Standalone Spamkiller?

Anti-Spam is the new name they've given to Spamkiller.

If you decide to switch you will have uninstall everything so I would first enable Windows Firewall to afford some protection.

Uninstall in the normal way and then use the MCPR removal tool, linked in my signature. Reboot and then install the new product.

RE: Standalone Spamkiller?

Thanks again, Peter. Just one more thing... if anti-spam is part of both packages, which of the two is the best one to get?

RE: Standalone Spamkiller?

Peter, I'm looking through some of the posts in this section and they refer to a Spam folder that's created in Outlook Express, if I understand correctly. Does Anti-Spam move spam to a folder in Outlook Express rathern than holding them on the server until they are visually checked? I don't want to spend money for Total Protection if Anti-Spam brings messages into Outlook Express to be rescued or deleted. Just how does Anti-Spam work?

Thanks...

RE: Standalone Spamkiller?

It's all linked through "McAfee.com Home" at top right corner of this page.
