Fake McAfee Total Protection Icon

My MacBook Air was affected by a fake McAfee attack. It has left a small fake McAfee Total Protection icon on the top menu bar. I've tried to remove it using Command and drag and through Settings/docking menu, but it just won't move. Any advice on how to permanently remove it?

Re: Fake McAfee Total Protection Icon

Hi @Paul-G,

Greetings from McAfee.

Kindly follow the steps to fix the issue.

  • Click on Go
  • Click on Go to folder
  • Type the location >> /usr/local/mcafee
  • Check for Mcafee uninstaller and execute it
  • Terminal will get open
  • Enter the Computer (MAC) password to allow for the permission
  • Mcafee will be removed but still few traces will be there on the same location which has to be moved to Trash.
  • McAfee traces are present in the below mentioned folders:
  • Click on Go >> Go to Folder >> /usr/local/
  • Click on Go >> Go to Folder >> /Library/Application Support
  • Click on Go >> Go to Folder >> /Library/LaunchAgents
  • Click on Go >> Go to Folder >> /Library/LaunchDaemons
  • Click on Go >> Go to Folder >> /Library/PreferencePanes
  • Click on Go >> Go to Folder >> /Library/Preferences
  • Click on Go >> Go to Folder >> /Library/StartupItems
  • Click on Go >> Go to Folder >> /private/var/tmp/
  • Empty Trash by right clicking on it

Re: Fake McAfee Total Protection Icon

Many thanks. I've gone through that and did find traces, which I have removed. But I still have the little icon on the dock & menu bar at the top of the screen. When I go to Settings it does not appear so I cannot delete. And when I try to drag the icon to the trash bin it won't let me do it (shows the circle with the line through). Any more thoughts?

Re: Fake McAfee Total Protection Icon

Update. I rebooted and the fake icon has gone. The only remaining issue now appears to be that the Notification Centre keeps sending me virus messages from the fake McAfee. Any ideas of how to stop that (other than just turning off notifications)?

Re: Fake McAfee Total Protection Icon

are there any programs active in the task manager. Maybe one of these if disabled could be the culprit. The other way is in browsers you can stop notifications check the apps that allow notifications maybe one of these if disabled would help.

Just a thought
