Re: Can't turn on Anti-spam filter

This discussion is relevant when the choice made by the user is to have Spam sent to the McAfee Anti-spam folder. It may be helpful in locating the whereabouts of emails that are spam.

When McAfee creates a McAfee Anti-spam folder, it places it as a sub-folder under Inbox in the Personal folders list.

If one right clicks on that Inbox folder and chooses "Add to favorites folder", the Inbox folder is added to the Favorites folder, but the McAfee Ant-spam folder is not added with it.

To add the McAfee Anti-spam folder to the Favorites folder, right click on it in the Personal folders list and choose "Add to favorites folder".  It will be added to the Favorites folder, but not as a sub-folder to the Inbox folder. It will be added there as a primary folder.

If one creates a subfolder in the Favorite folders list, it appears as a sub-folder in the Personal folders list, but not in the Favorite folders list.

As a further note: It should be mentioned that, if the sender of a received email is in the Friends list, the email will be passed to the inbox. It will not be filtered out to the McAfee Anti-spam folder by the Personal Filters list, even if the subject of the email is stated to be dis-allowed (blocked) in the Personal Filters list.

On the other hand, if a Sender does not appear in the Friends list, but does appear in the Personal Filter list as Allowed, the email will be allowed. This will occur even if the subject of that email is listed anywhere in the Personal Filter list as Blocked.

In other words, it seems that McAfee checks for Allowed email first and sends them through, making no further checks..

DOCUMENTATION

It seems that it would be worthwhile to McAfee customers if the McAfee Help documentation would clearly layout the sequence of filtering, as well as the way that the McAfee Anti-spam folder is established, listed and used. A concise flow-chart or an "IF - THEN - ELSE" sequence might work well.

A related item for documentation would be the description in the Help section of the filtering level, reproduced here.

Level

Description

Low

Most e-mail is accepted.

Medium-Low

Only obvious spam messages are filtered.

Medium (Recommended)

E-mail is filtered at the recommended level.

Medium-High

Any e-mail that resembles spam is filtered.

High

Only messages from senders in your friends list are accepted.

The Description column is so imprecise as to be of very little use. It would be helpful to explain just what the process if filtering is.

At least, it would help to know what McAfee means by such terms as, "obvious spam" and "resembles spam".

Readers of this note would be well advised to check it out on their own systems. Please respond with questions and corrections.

Thanks.

Roy

Re: Can't turn on Anti-spam filter

I can agree that we shell consider providing more detailed documentation for advanced users on "sequence of filtering". But it looks not reasonable to involve user in all details of how spam is detected, this mechanism is quite complex and involves assesment of many message traits.

On another note: I feel this thread is a mixture of few different issues. Few people here did have problems not with personal filters but with turning on Anti-Spam itself. If you do have this problem, please send me a PM, I will get in touch with you.

Thanks,

okv.
