Re: Scanning Rootkit

Jump to solution

What was the fix?  Was the fix the next build of McAfee Antivirus that excluded Windows XP?

I can't upgrade my OS because my laptop is 32-bit.

Re: Scanning Rootkit

All OS's come in 32-bit flavour too you know, so that isn't an issue.  The issue would be if your machine can handle the OS.  There are compatibility wizards available from Microsoft for the various higher OS's.   I can give you a link to them with a little research if you indicate which one(s).

The fix is that ModifyCntxtId.exe file.

When you downloaded it did you save it to your desktop or wherever?

Unzip it.

In SecurityCenter disable Access Protection and make sure you have applied that.

Then you would have to right-click the saved file > Properties and unblock, Apply etc.

To run it you would then probably have to repeat right-click > Properties and this time go to the Compatibility tab.

Click the Change settings for all users option

Then select run this in compatibility mode with Windows XP (SP3 if shown) and run as Administrator.

It should work.

Yes, I followed all steps in the original post:  Saved to Desktop...Disable Access Protection and Applied Changes...and Unblocked ModifyCntxtId.exe.

The file in the original post, however, downloads as an executable...not a Zip file.  I tried your Zip but I get the same error:  "not a valid Win32 application."

The only Compatibility options for me are operating systems earlier than my Windows XP Pro SP 3, such as Windows 95, 98, NT 4 and 2000.  I don't see the Change Settings for All Users option.

Yes, sorry, I can't recall the differences in those displays as it's been a  while since I used XP.

You could try calling support - you never know, it might help.

Re: Scanning Rootkit

BTW Googling that error I see a prime reason is an incomplete download of the file in the first place, so are you quite sure it downloaded fully?

Re: Scanning Rootkit

Thanks.  I tried the McAfee Virtual Technician but it only detected subscription issues and then fixed them.  I also chatted with Tech Support but Katherine G wanted to remote into my computer.  I didn't want that.

What's interesting is you mentioned in the LiveSafe discussion that the fix is meant for 12.8 versions of McAfee.  That's the build I have.

McAfee Security Center

Version:  12.8

Build:  12.8.992

Affld:  636

-----

McAfee Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware

Version:  16.8

Build:  16.8.821

Engine:  2760.0

I can keep tinkering with the properties of the ModifyCntxtId.exe but nothing has worked to launch it yet.

I'll try downloading again.  Sorry, my above post was responding to CatDaddy...but the Reply option didn't take.

Re: Scanning Rootkit

The dialog box to download states it's only a binary file at 62.2KB.  Not that big.  Your zipped file was less than half of that.

Whenever I download the executable, it's always a generic icon...meaning, no application is assigned to it.  It looks like number 2 in the image.  I wonder why it isn't a McAfee application...you know, like the M shield?

Of course Windows 7 has a different set of default icons so it looks like this on mine:

Capture.JPG

Details describe it simply as an application.

Is XP up to date; SP3 and is IE version 9 ?

Not sure if that has any bearing but just checking all aspects.
