No network access after McAfee update

Jump to solution

After a recent automatica McAfee update I get No Network Access after rebooting the computer.

The solution that always works is this:

Open Network Sharing Center

Change Adapter Settings

Local Area Connection Network 2 -> Disable and Enable

Although it is a reliable solution I would prefer to fix the root cause.

Any ideas?

Security Center ver 11.0 build 11.0.669 last update 4/25/2012

VirusScan ver 15.0

Firewall ver 12.0

I got a new request from McAfee to restart my computer for an update this morning and the problem is solved.

I see no mention of anything new on the FAQ page so I'm not sure if the new version is the solution or it's just a coincidence.

Hi tomlamson,

This is something new that we are seeing recently with some customers. Please check your email as we have sent you one to arrange a call back to collect logs and diagnose the issue . Please have the same replied to proceed further.

I have the same issue it seems with Virus Plus on a Win 7 Pro Dell computer.  Problem started Sunday 5/6/2012 as I noticed McAfee updater wanting me to reboot for an update.  After rebooting no network connection and disabling/ reenabling the network adapter did not help.  Restored to 5/5/2012 Windows config and network adapter again worked OK.  McAfee tried another update this morning 5/10/2012 and the same issue after rebooting.  Would be interested in any fixes and contact me if you need additional information.  Thanks, Scott

1) I did some investigation on my own that fixed the problem and

2) I got the call back from McAfee who collected some logs for analysis.

1) A Google search led me here:

http://www.geckoandfly.com/2501/how-to-remove-and-uninstall-bonjour-mdnsresponderexe-process/

Based on that I removed cs3 and the problem went away.

2) The McAfee engineer also suggested that Bonjour was typically the problem and they are collecting logs from multiple users and plan to confer with the Bonjour developers to find a solution.

arledgsc, Select Start, Run, sevices.msc and look to see if Bonjour is listed. If yes then it is a candidate.

Hats off to Google, geckoandfly, and the McAfee support team

I forgot to mention that I only removed cs3 which probably uninstalled Bonjour as part of it's uninstall process.

I did NOT uninstall Bonjour as described in the link above.

I forgot that I got a popup from McAfee this morning:

"Program wants internet access:  Bonjour Service" and I replied Block.

That might have been the solution.

Thanks a lot tomlamson and really appreciate the information.  I did have Bonjour and could not delete the files as they were being used by another service so I uninstall Bonjour.  No help as I still have no network access after McAfee update and a reboot.  I can not disable the adapter and re-enable to make it work.  I restored to 5/5/2012 and turned off McAfee updates in the meantime.

Well, the problem came back.

Restarted computer, no network access, Bonjour is NOT running..

The original fix still worked:

Open Network Sharing Center

Change Adapter Settings

Local Area Connection Network 2 -> Disable and Enable

Same thing happened here. A neighbour has a Dell Desktop with Vista 32. McAffee updated a few day back and the next morning on booting both his router and PC (he always fully boots his router before his PC) he lost his hardwired internet connection.

Rather than disable/reset I right mouse-clicked on the LAN connection in the taskbar, selected Diagnose and Repair and then chose Reset Local Area Connection. I imagine it's a different route to exactly the same function as Reset/Disable.

I was surprised that it worked staright away as it just happens to be one of those things one very rarely has to do, particularly with a wired connection. Usually it turns out to a be a physical cable issue or corrupted driver and involves a little more investigation.

Anyway, he shut down his router the night before last as always and yesterday morning fired the Dell up with the same result that the LAN connection only had local access.

I went in this morning and performed the same correction and was pleasantly surprised to see that it worked again and the LAN connection connected instantly to the internet. As a user my elderly neighbour is loath to update anything himself but McAfee just does it's thing without intervention. I don't want to roll his PC back to a state pre-update yet because I presume McAfee had a valid reason for updating. I could do it to test the theory that McAfee is the causal link but haven't had the time yet to mess about with it for a longer period.

I've shown him the workround but for 30 secs of work (when he can't remember how I did it) I can get him back online. He runs no specialist software, accesses his email online and occasionally used Skype but it otherwise a pretty light user doing normal things like booking plane tickets and so forth online. He does run the free version of Dropbox which I don't think he uses much. His OS is fully patched and up-to-date as is his browser, IE 9.

The official FAQ is

http://service.mcafee.com/faqdocument.aspx?id=TS101346

Happening to a reasonable % users but not a large %. Why some and not others is what Mcafee is trying to ascertain.
