I'm trying to repair a protection problem. " The detection signature file is between 8 and 29 days old."
My McAfee software will not "fix" the problem and neither will virtual technician. I am directed to rename the DAT folder, but my computer won't let me. I am then directed to end process mcshield.exe so that I can rename the DAT folder, however, mcshield.exe process does not appear in the windows task manager processes pane. The only processes shown with mc prefix are mcagent.exe and mcshell.exe. Can someone help?
Hi,
Check whether the computer's date & time are correct
Check and delete if you find any other antivirus software from add/remove programs ; its folders from C:/program files and common files (as it will have conflicts in updates)
Run the update tool from this link http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MSCPRXFIX.exe. and restart the computer
And click update in security center .
Kindly report back if you have any issues on the same.

Dinesh K,
The computer's date and time are correct.
I could not find any other antivirus software, unless you consider windows defender antivirus software. Windows defender has been running and did not seem to cause any problems previously, why now?
Running the update tool from your posted link and restarting the computer did not solve the issue. I did have a wireless connectivity problem when I restarted the computer and had to unplug modem to reset.
As I was writing this message McAfee started updating and the protection warning disappeared..........It seems as though it may have solved the issue, just taking a while to do so.
I am waiting for update to complete to post this message.
I recieved a message that Mcafee is up to date but it doesn't seem like the computer was actually updated. I'm hoping that it's all woking as it should be.
thank you for your help.
McAfee VirusScan DATs are normally updated daily, it is important to have these installed on your computer ; if not the security center will show up a not protected message, which is happening in your case. The next time, when you get the message click update in security center.Kindly report back if you have any issues.

Dinesh K
I appreciate your help thus far.
Can you help me fix McAfee so that it updates automatically like it used to?
Can you explain why it doesn't update automatically and why this happened?
Hi Waltb,
Some of the reasons virus scan would stop to update would be because of malware infections, proxy connections, any additional entry in host file or because of slow internet connection.
In your case, I suspect the reason for the sudden change in protection status would be due to your internet connection. And even pay caution while opening any email attachments form unknown sources as it may contain any infections. Apart from the above run frequent updates and scans so that you should be alright.
Thanks & Regards,
Dinesh K
I am experiencing the same problem. I found the attached but it was from 2007, but sounds like the same issue. I am going to try to do what it says and see if I can get it working. From the sounds of things, our proxy server is requiring authentication so McAfee cannot update. Strange thing is, mine was working fine until a few months ago??? Anyway, best of luck, and if you find a solution, please post it on here. I will be sure to do the same.
