So, three times now my Total Protection was automatically updated to a newer version of the application in the background. Each new version was missing the “Update Settings” that allows the user (me) to indicate whether to allow the app to update automatically, have it download the updates but wait until the user installs them manually, or wait until the user downloads and installs them manually. Additionally, when the user attempts to manually “check for updates,” what is displayed is a screen that indicates that the application is completely up to date. There is no visual indication of percentages (25%... 50%...75%... 100%) of the app checking for updates like it used to do. It’s just-- BOOM -- the screen says I have the latest updates. After two weeks of this occurring, I realized that I have no idea if the app is really updating.
Twice, tech support reverted my application to the previous version and it worked as before, but then the app would of course automatically update in the background to the newer version. The current one is 1.9.253. Again, there are no Update Settings, and if I "check for updates" I just get the screen that says I have the latest updates.
Tech Support today tells me that this is a FEATURE of the new version. That McAfee did away with the Update Settings and the user's ability to control updates. I'm supposed to trust that the app is updating with the latest anti-virus files instead of visually seeing the app update.
Can anyone else confirm that what I was told is true? This is a FEATURE? If so, I think it's a mistake. Please bring back the Update Settings, McAfee.
Hi @RBinPerson,
Greetings from McAfee.
We are sorry for the inconvenience caused. I have sent a private message to you, kindly revert with the required details to help you regarding the issue.

Revert? I was told by McAfee tech support agent Abinaya in ticket # 1-47683571 that this new version of Total Protection does not have Update Settings, that it's a feature! So you're telling me that this is not true? I have reverted back to previous versions three times already, and then some time passes and the program automatically updates to the newer version. Each time it has not had Update Settings. So is it "normal" or not? Thanks.
hello,
i am on the same version and i can confirm there are no update settings in this new version.
updates are fully integrated in the program.
you can check if the program received updates for example;
open mcafee app
go to question mark on the left side
above you can click on app ect and there you can manually check
or go back to question again
and click on info/about
there you can see the version number current and below several modules like Antivirus
there is date of last update received
also from the Windows taskbar go to the icon center ^ where the mcafee icon is.
click or right click on check for udates
in the following article are some new features described also worth reading;

Thank you for your reply. That article link you supplied unfortunately says nothing about Update Settings being removed (and in fact the picture of the interface shows a box called "Updates") and my interface has in that spot instead "Personal Data Cleanup." But everything else you say corresponds to my version. I suppose I must trust that the application is indeed updating with the latest anti-virus files. I preferred to actually SEE it being done by the percentage points it used to display. Cheers.
yes, you are correct.
the article from the link posted above is about other changes for the New version of Livesafe/Totalprotection.
i always open the mcafee app and go to the question mark and from there click on Info/About and see if the date was updated for the Antivirus component.
since begin of may having the New version and no update problems sofar.
started with version R107 and current R109
I've had this problem for more than a month.
I start with McAfee Total Protection installed on my FOUR computers and they show up in My Account > My Apps.
At least a dozen times (total for FOUR computers), something has uninstalled my McAfee Total Protection and it's been replaced by 1.9.253.1 and there's NO indication of ANY computers in My Account > My Apps.
The only thing I've found googling 1.9.253.1 is this garbage. It says it's specifically for version 1.9.253.1 ... https://www.advanceduninstaller.com/McAfee-97c747a93ce1c266b8ea2a3591e064aa-application.htm
Thinking back, it might have started when I downloaded PC Optimizer.
Again, this has happened on my FOUR computers. I've had to uninstall 1.9.253.1 and re-install McAfee Total Protection more than a dozen times. One of my computers just came out of the box and McAfee Total Protection (and PC optimizer) was installed 2 days before it happened.
I can only assume that my virus protection, designed to keep viruses out, lets a virus in that changes my virus protection.
Update ... It continues to happen every few days. Now it's being replaced by 1.10.231.1 and there's NO indication of ANY computers in My Account > My Apps.
Please let me know if you find a solution.
what i know is that Livesafe and Totalprotection have been updated to a new version.
this process is replacing version R51 to the current R109 with number 1.9.253
